PRIME Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s three-day visit to Saudi Arabia has taken place at a decisive moment for Pakistan’s foreign policy. The visit is not simply about reinforcing traditional brotherly relations with Riyadh; it is about recalibrating Pakistan’s political, economic and defense position in a rapidly changing Middle East. The presence of Field Marshal CDF Asim Munir alongside the Premier is significant because it demonstrates that the visit has both political and military dimensions. At a time when the Gulf is facing unprecedented security pressures, Islamabad wants Riyadh to see Pakistan not merely as a beneficiary of Saudi economic assistance, but as a strategic partner capable of contributing to regional security. The Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement signed in September 2025 already established a much stronger security framework, declaring that aggression against either country would be treated as aggression against both. The current visit can be seen as an effort to translate that political commitment into practical coordination.

The defense dimension is arguably the most important feature of the visit. Pakistan possesses one of the region’s largest and most experienced conventional militaries, while Kingdom possesses enormous financial resources, strategic geography and growing technological ambitions.
