Iran-US ceasefire, calculations and politics of war

IN a dramatic and consequential turn, Pakistan has emerged as a central diplomatic actor, brokering a two week ceasefire between the United States and Iran at a moment when the region stood on the brink of catastrophic escalation.

The last minute intervention by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir has, for now, averted what many feared could spiral into a conflict of global proportions. Only hours before the agreement, US President Donald Trump had issued a stark ultimatum to Iran, warning of devastating strikes if the Strait of Hormuz was not reopened. Strategic bombers were reportedly positioned and the rhetoric had escalated to an unprecedented level, signaling a decisive and potentially irreversible military action. That moment has now been paused.

The ceasefire, facilitated through Islamabad, has opened a narrow but critical diplomatic window. Both Washington and Tehran are expected to enter negotiations in Islamabad, with Iran’s multi point framework forming the basis of initial engagement. The immediate outcomes are significant: hostilities have been suspended and the Strait of Hormuz through which nearly a fifth of global oil supply passes has been reopened, easing immediate pressure on global energy markets. The international response has been swift and largely positive. Global actors have welcomed the ceasefire as a step back from the brink, urging both sides to translate this pause into a lasting settlement.........
