Diverse leadership: Challenges and opportunities

AS I assumed the charge of Dean of the School of Digital and Cinematic Arts at the Institute of Art and Culture (IAC), I found myself reflecting upon a unique professional journey. Having previously served as Dean at Beaconhouse National University (BNU) and the University of Central Punjab (UCP), I have been privileged to experience academic leadership in three institutions, each with its own philosophy, vision, governance model and institutional culture. This transition reinforced an enduring lesson: effective leadership is not about replicating a formula but about understanding institutional realities while inspiring positive change. Leadership in higher education extends far beyond administration. It is the ability to align vision with execution, empower people and create an environment where innovation and academic excellence flourish. Every university has its own history, values, strengths and challenges. Consequently, leadership that succeeds in one institution may require thoughtful adaptation in another. The true leader is therefore both principled and flexible.

During my journey, I discovered that institutions differ not only in their academic priorities but also in their organizational cultures. Some universities excel in research, others in teaching, while some are driven by entrepreneurship or creativity. None is perfect, yet each offers valuable opportunities for growth.
