Top 100 Oilers: No. 22 — Randy Gregg

Oilersnation is reviving the Top 100 Edmonton Oilers of All Time list, a project originally created by the late Robin Brownlee in 2015. Randy Gregg comes in at No. 22 on our updated 2025 list. He was ranked No. 12 on Brownlee’s original list. 

Many hockey players have singular goals: to be drafted into the NHL, to play their first game, to win the Stanley Cup. There is a much smaller class of players for whom hockey is just one aspect of their working or personal lives, who aren’t all that swept up into the showbiz nature of being an NHLer, and choose unconventional paths along the way.

That applies to Randy Gregg — ahem, Dr. Randall J. Gregg — a family physician in Edmonton who also helped revitalize baseball in the city recently with the Trappers. 

Once upon a time on the ice, he was a trusted piece of a championship unit, becoming an Oilers Hall of Famer and one of just seven players in franchise history to be a part of each Stanley Cup victory in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990.

He took some breaks along the way, represented Canada at the Olympics, and, all things considered, could have made more money from hockey if he wanted to move. But he didn’t.

“I was approached by an American team and offered a very nice contract to come back,” he said in 1986 when he returned from retirement the first time. “But I’ll always be an Oiler. I’m an Edmontonian.”

Of Gregg’s 474 NHL regular season games, 453 of them came in an Oilers sweater, a sought-after free agent who hopped aboard the train in 1982 just before the playoffs and the shocking Miracle on Manchester.

He was 25 at the time, but already had a bundle of life experience, having spent the last two years in Japan as a player-coach with the Kokudo Bunnies to maintain his amateur status.

The importance of amateur sport and building up a Canadian Men’s National Team was a goal for Gregg, one that overshadowed the........
