Medicare Advantage does have advantages

Bronx: As a practicing physician, I respectfully offer a different perspective on the discussion surrounding Medicare Advantage. For many of my patients, these plans — including Aetna Medicare Advantage — have provided meaningful benefits that traditional Medicare alone often does not. These may include lower out-of-pocket costs, prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, hearing benefits, care coordination, disease management programs, and annual limits on out-of-pocket spending. For many seniors on fixed incomes, these features can make a real difference. In my experience, many plans also emphasize preventive care and coordinated management of chronic illnesses, helping patients navigate an increasingly complex healthcare system.

No insurance model is perfect. Medicare Advantage plans can require prior authorization for certain advanced imaging studies, procedures, surgeries and other services, and provider networks may be more limited than traditional Medicare with a Medigap supplement. Yet, traditional Medicare also has coverage rules and prior authorization requirements for select services. The focus should be on making these processes timely, evidence-based and patient-centered so that medically necessary care is never unnecessarily delayed.

Rather than portraying one system as inherently superior, we should focus on what matters most: ensuring that every senior has access to high-quality, affordable healthcare while preserving the freedom to choose the coverage that best meets their individual medical and financial needs.
