The disruption of an alleged plot targeting a New York City synagogue earlier this year showed an evolving threat facing our communities and our nation at large: that of cryptocurrency funding illicit and harmful activity. Thankfully, dedicated investigators stopped what could have become another tragedy. But preventing the next attack requires more than identifying dangerous individuals. It requires following the money that helps make these plots possible.

As the former director of intelligence analysis at the New York Police Department, I spent a large portion of my career helping identify and disrupt terrorist threats before lives were lost. To this day, protecting communities remains my mission. One lesson has remained constant throughout my career: terrorists cannot operate without financing.

What has changed is how easily that financing can move.
