Benjamin Katabana knifed Uchenna Okirie, 33, to death in the corridor of Somerleyton House, in Norwich's Golden Triangle, after luring him out of his flat through a series of goading WhatsApp messages.

The killing was captured on CCTV in the accommodation block, with the footage showing Katabana stabbing his victim once.

He then went on to repeatedly attack Mr Okirie - a former postgraduate student at the UEA's School of International Development, who finished his studies in 2022 - and kick him in the head.

Although he offered a plea to manslaughter, Katabana denied murder, but jurors took less than six hours to find the 28-year-old guilty following a Norwich Crown Court trial.

On Friday (August 7), he was given a life sentence with a minimum term of 20 years by Judge Anthony Bate, who said Mr Okirie's life had been "cut short by a wicked act of violence".

"You drew a knife and stabbed him in the back so deep as to penetrate his aorta," he said.

"You kicked and stamped on his head after he collapsed on the floor mortally wounded."

Judge Bate said although it could not be determined whether Katabana, who he said was an "angry young man", had taken a knife to the scene with him, he insisted it was "plain" he had "intended to kill".

The judge said Mr Okirie, "a much loved and talented brother and son", was "entitled to feel safe" in the accommodation block that had been his home.

But he said the victim was "taken by surprise and quickly overwhelmed in this brutal attack".
