Robert Pipe was a resident at Homestead House in Old Catton, Norwich, when he died there on March 1. 

An inquest into his death was opened at Norfolk Coroner’s Court this week, with his provisional cause of death recorded as “asphyxiation due to, or as a result of, choking on food material (strawberry)”.

The court also heard the 84-year-old had several co-morbidities including vascular dementia, emphysema and ischemic heart disease. 

Mr Pipe, a retired window manufacturer who was born in London, was identified by his daughter. 

Area coroner Johanna Thompson requested statements from the care home, Adult Social Services and Mr Pipe’s GP ahead of a full inquest to be held on August 4. 

She also invited his family to provide a statement with any background or concerns they may have.
