Kate Mathers, 42, has watched her son, Tom Mathers, grow from strength to strength in the sport, which he has been playing since he was just three years old.

After experts spotted his "natural talent", Tom was given the opportunity to play at Royal Norwich Golf Club with the seven and overs at the age of five and has since gone on to play at county level.

The 18-year-old with a handicap of one is now due to start at Des Moines Area Community College in Iowa in August after discovering there "was not a lot of opportunity for him in the UK."

He has also been given a £10,000 scholarship towards his annual fees of £15,000, meaning he and his family have to take on the remaining £4,500, in addition to paying for flights, food and equipment.

Ms Mathers, who is a beauty therapist and mother of three, is determined to make sure the bills do not get in the way of Tom pursuing his dreams.

She is fundraising for the costs and is also appealing for sponsorship to help with equipment for Tom.

Ms Mathers said: "We've already got Grocott and Murfit, a construction company in Fakenham, sponsoring him with a monthly payment for his fees, which we're really grateful for.

"I just need to keep the momentum going."

Ms Mathers added she has been inspired by her son's own work ethic to ensure he is able to make the most of this opportunity.

She said: "I've just been in awe of how focused he is. I get the most pleasure watching him do what he loves and that has driven me to give him the best.

"He has always been really dedicated and has prioritised work over friends. I'm his biggest fan. I've watched him in all his competitions, driven him anywhere he needs to be and he deserves every opportunity."

She added: "I just never wanted him to feel like he missed out on anything and I won't stop until he is there."
