Delhi Police files FIR against Meta over child sexual abuse content on Instagram

Delhi Police has registered an FIR over the alleged availability of child sexual abuse material on Meta-owned platforms following directions from the NHRC. The case follows months of scrutiny over Instagram advertisements, government intervention and questions about online child safety.

Delhi Police has registered an FIR over the alleged availability of Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material (CSEAM) on Meta-owned platforms, following directions from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The development comes after months of scrutiny over advertisements on Instagram that allegedly promoted access to illegal child abuse material.

NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo confirmed the action on November 4. In a post on X, he said, “Acting on our directions, Delhi Police has registered an FIR regarding the availability of Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) on platforms operated by @MetaIndia.” The case marks another stage in a controversy that began with a BBC investigation earlier this year.
