The incident reportedly involved the Egyptian-owned Tihamah and marked the first fatal Houthi strike on shipping since the Iran war began. Separately, the US military struck the Panama-flagged Vela Nova in the Gulf of Oman.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said the aircraft he secretly used to leave Turkey last month was at greater risk of being targeted amid concerns over a possible Iranian assassination attempt. Trump was moved from Air Force One to a smaller military plane during the covert operation.
