Key risks women should know about menopause and heart health

Menopause can bring changes that affect cardiovascular health. A gynaecologist explains the heart disease risks women should know about and why lifestyle changes and preventive care matter.

New Delhi: Menopause is often associated with hot flushes, sleep disturbances and hormonal changes. However, the transition to menopause also has important implications for cardiovascular health. As oestrogen levels decline, women may experience changes that can increase their long-term risk of heart disease, making menopause an important opportunity to focus on prevention and proactive health management.

Oestrogen plays a protective role in cardiovascular health and influences blood vessels, cholesterol and metabolism. During menopause, declining oestrogen levels can contribute to increased abdominal fat, higher blood pressure and unfavourable changes in cholesterol, including lower levels of protective HDL cholesterol and higher levels of LDL cholesterol.
