Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz pulls out of French Open due to wrist injury

Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will miss next month's French Open due to an ongoing wrist injury. The Spaniard also pulled out of the Madrid Open.

New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz has been forced to pull out of the French Open due to a wrist injury, which he suffered in his first-round match at the Barcelona Open last week. The Spaniard has won the Roland Garros for the last two years, and was the favourite to lift the title for the third time in Paris. The French Open is set to begin on May 18.

After suffering a defeat against Jannik Sinner in the Monte Carlo Masters final, Alcaraz decided to play in Barcelona just two days later, but injured his wrist in the first-round match. Scans revealed the problem was more serious than initially thought, after which he also withdrew from the Madrid Open

‘This is a difficult time for me, but I am sure we will come out of it stronger’

The Spaniard said that he has decided not to participate in the Masters tournament in Rome and the French Open. Alcaraz further added that it is a difficult time for him, and he will come out of it stronger.

“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros as we wait to evaluate the progress so we can decide when to return to the court. This is a difficult time for me, but I am sure we will come out of it stronger,” Alcaraz said in a statement on social media.
