AL–Safran’s ‘Aravalli’ Engine: A major step towards indigenous helicopter propulsion

HAL and Safran have signed an agreement to jointly design, develop, manufacture and support the new engine. The Aravalli engine will produce around 3,500–4,000 horsepower and will be used for India’s future high-power helicopters.

New Delhi: India is taking a significant step towards developing its own helicopter engines with the new “Aravalli” engine. The engine is being jointly developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines through their 50:50 joint venture, SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd.

HAL and Safran have signed an agreement to jointly design, develop, manufacture and support the new engine. The Aravalli engine will produce around 3,500–4,000 horsepower and will be used for India’s future high-power helicopters.

This is a major milestone for India because, for the first time, a high-power helicopter engine of this class will be designed and developed in India. The project will help India move beyond simply producing engines under licence and build........
