King Harald V dies at 89: Norway mourns monarch who spent over three decades on throne

Norway’s King Harald V has died at the age of 89 after more than three decades on the throne. His son Haakon has succeeded him as king, marking Norway’s first royal transition since 1991.

Norway’s King Harald V died on Friday, August 28, at the age of 89, ending a reign that lasted more than three decades. The Norwegian palace said he died at the National Hospital in Oslo at 6:35 am. Harald had been Europe’s oldest reigning monarch before his death.

His son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically succeeded him and became King Haakon VIII. Harald had ruled Norway since January 1991 and remained on the throne even as several elderly European monarchs chose to abdicate in recent years. Norway’s monarchy has a mainly ceremonial role, with political authority resting with its elected government and parliament.
