Govt approves nearly 100% ethanol fuel: What is E100 and how is it different from E20?

The Indian government has approved E100 ethanol fuel under amended Central Motor Vehicles Rules, effective October 26, 2026. The decision allows compatible flex-fuel vehicles to operate on nearly pure ethanol. Here's what E100 fuel is, how it differs from E20 petrol and whether existing petrol cars can use it.

The ministry issued the notification on October 23, 2026, and published it in the Official Gazette on Monday, October 26. The amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, came into effect immediately. E100 has now been included alongside E85 in vehicle emission standards and testing requirements. There is one important catch for existing car owners. Your regular petrol car cannot automatically switch to E100.
