Can AI Work on the Factory Floor? Inside India’s MSME AI-Readiness

Artificial intelligence could transform India's manufacturing MSMEs by improving quality control, inventory management and production planning. Yet affordability, infrastructure and skills remain major challenges. The article examines what smaller manufacturers need to adopt AI and the potential economic opportunity ahead.

Much of the conversation around AI in Indian manufacturing focuses on advanced models, predictive algorithms and sophisticated dashboards. But for an MSME, the starting point is often much simpler: can AI help detect a defect before it leaves the factory? Can it help prevent a raw-material shortage? Can it work without a dedicated IT team? These are not just obstacles. They are the very questions that will unlock AI’s biggest opportunity: making it work for the businesses that need it most. Meeting MSMEs where they are, rather than chasing more sophisticated technology, is what true AI-readiness looks like.

The stakes are hard to overstate. MSMEs contribute nearly a third of India’s GDP and support over 250 million jobs, making them one of the most consequential layers of the economy to get this transition right. Recognising this, the government has scaled up its push on digital and AI adoption for the sector, anchored by the ₹10,371.92 crore IndiaAI Mission, which includes dedicated pillars for compute capacity, datasets, application development and future skills aimed at democratising AI access, including for MSMEs.
