Explained: Why there is a need to ensure benefits of PM Modi's welfare schemes target genuinely needy

The Supreme Court on Wednesday condemned the practice of announcing free schemes before elections while stating that people are not willing to work as they are getting free rations and money. This remark was made by a bench of Justices BR Gavai and Augustine George Masih while hearing a case related to the right to shelter of homeless persons in urban areas. The bench said that we appreciate your concern for them, but would it not be better if they were made a part of the mainstream of society? They should be allowed to contribute to the development of the nation.

Echoing similar sentiments Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman and Managing Director SN Subrahmanyam, while referring to government schemes, said that construction labourers shy away from work due to the availability of welfare schemes and comforts. Speaking at the CII South Global Linkages Summit, Subrahmanyam expressed concern over the shortage of labourers in the construction industry. He said that a large number of people are migrating across the world in search of work. But, in India, people are not ready to go anywhere else for work. The construction of infrastructure like roads and power plants is important for the development of the country. It is another matter that this is becoming difficult due to the shortage of workers.
