BRICS Summit 2026: Inside PM Modi’s quiet West Asia peace push as Iran, UAE meet in Delhi

The Iran-UAE meeting at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi highlights India’s quiet diplomatic push for dialogue and de-escalation in West Asia. With strong ties across the region, New Delhi is positioning BRICS as a platform for continued engagement.

New Delhi: A meeting between the leaders of Iran and the UAE on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi has given India’s diplomatic efforts in West Asia an important boost.

UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday during the summit. Their discussions covered regional and international developments, de-escalation, stability and efforts towards peace and development in the region.

The meeting comes at a difficult time for West Asia where the ongoing conflict has put pressure on relations between countries in the region and has also exposed differences within the BRICS grouping. Both Iran and the UAE are members of BRICS, making their disagreements particularly relevant to the bloc.

For India, however, the meeting also offers an opportunity to show that New Delhi can provide space for dialogue without formally stepping into the role of a mediator.
