Stealth and strategy: India’s rise in the global Defence arena
New Delhi: There’s something about all India-US meets, something that piques interest globally, even when it may not concern nations and nationalities. Whether it is the coming together of two of the greatest “maverick” world leaders that we have today, or it is the build-up of the “event” but PM Narendra Modi in White House is akin to Lionel Messi walking into a packed football stadium, or as iconic as when Kennedy met Khrushchev, but with India now in the drivers seat. On expected lines, the Modi-Trump official visit at Washington DC, on February 13, was a moment that was both spectacular and high on enthusiasm. And we are not just talking about the bonhomie and the banter, but the trade and the business which was the highlight of the event.
For Indians, diaspora included, this was one of the most fruitful parleys (between Modi and Trump) in recent times. They talked trade, tariffs, terrorism, while maintaining the ‘tough talk’ stance all throughout. Out of the major takeaways from the official conversation, the one that would have delighted India the most, could be a proposal by the US to sell their stealth jet planes to India. Signaling his interest in the Indian Defence space, President Trump said in a joint news conference, “Starting this year, we’ll be increasing military sales to India by many billions of dollars,” he also added, “We’re also paving the way to ultimately provide India with the F-35 stealth fighters.”
