PM Modi on AI: First leader to stress 'humans hold the key' — why responsibility must guide AI dream

New Delhi: We will take it one step ahead and begin our piece with a question — be ready to be perplexed — What’s common between, The Thing (1982), The Blair Witch Project (1999), and the Mist (2007)? The films, all classic horror movies, were based on fear that was alien. In these, the characters faced unsettling situations with mostly “ambiguous threats or unclear dangers.” Now tell us, what’s the similarity between the flicks and most of the discussions surrounding the Artificial Intelligence today? Everything, right? We are caught completely ‘unguarded’ when it comes to the AI, totally flummoxed at the endless possibilities it could bring forth and entirely ‘terrified’ about the uncertain times that await us. There are mundane questions like — will we have our jobs? Will humans be replaced? Will bots govern us and enslave us? Can they commit crimes?… And then there are bigger political deliberations — will AI change the global order? Will Supremacy in tech determine our influence? So on and forth.

While the fear is natural, some believe it is entirely unfounded. India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, at the Paris Summit today, helped to allay those fears to a large extent. He is one of the few global leaders who tackled the issue........
