F&O trap: Derivatives trading inflicts average loss of Rs 1.16 lakh on Indian investors in FY26

There has been a combined loss of as much as Rs 91,685 crore in FY26 only on account of derivatives trading, the finance ministry has told the Parliament. Despite the frightening figure, it has actually gone down 18.75% compared to the loss investors incurred in FY26 in F&O trading.

Kolkata: The losses inflicted by equity derivatives or F&O trading on adventurous individual investors continue. The Union finance ministry has informed the Parliament that net losses incurred by individuals in the equity derivatives segment have reduced from Rs 1.12 lakh crore in FY25 to Rs 91,685 crore in FY26 due to several regulatory measures taken by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Following these measures, SEBI has observed that the number of unique individual investors in the equity derivatives segment has reduced from 98.10 lakh to 78.60 lakh in 2025-26 compared to........
