New Delhi: Hariyali Teej 2026 will be celebrated on August 15. From ghewar and bangles to mehendi and new clothes, the Sindhara sent by a married woman’s maternal family is much more than a festive hamper – it is a reminder that marriage may change a daughter’s address, but not her place in her parents’ home.

There is a particular kind of anticipation attached to Hariyali Teej: the rustle of a new green sari, the smell of mehendi, the promise of ghewar, songs drifting through courtyards and, for many married women, the arrival of a package from maika — the maternal home. Called Sindhara, this traditional gift is often filled with sweets, clothes, bangles, henna and other items associated with shringar. But why does this gift traditionally travel from the woman’s parental home after she is married? The answer lies at the intersection of devotion, kinship and an old social custom that gave married daughters a special occasion to remain connected to the families they had left behind.
