Ping Ping, Fu Shuang head to US: China sends two pandas after Xi-Trump summit

China has used giant pandas as diplomatic goodwill ambassadors for decades. In 1972, Beijing sent two pandas to the US following then-President Richard Nixon’s historic visit to China.

New Delhi: China has sent two giant pandas to the United States, with Ping Ping and Fu Shuang leaving Chengdu for their new home at Zoo Atlanta on Sunday. The 10-year panda agreement comes days after Chinese President Xi Jinping met US President Donald Trump in Washington.

The pandas departed Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport at around 2:55 am local time aboard a chartered flight. They are expected to spend the next 10 years at Zoo Atlanta under a new international cooperative research agreement on giant panda conservation.
