Census 2027 begins today; caste to be recorded for first time since Independence

Census 2027 begins in snow-bound areas with self-enumeration from August 17, covering remote regions of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand before winter sets in.

New Delhi: The population enumeration phase of Census 2027 will begin on Monday in Ladakh and snow-bound areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Residents in these difficult-to-reach regions can use the self-enumeration facility between August 17 and August 31.

After the online exercise, census officials will conduct door-to-door enumeration from September 1 to September 30. The rest of the country will undergo population counting in February 2027.
