As Narendra Modi completes 25 years in public office as Chief Minister and Prime Minister, NITI Aayog remains one of the key institutional changes of his tenure, replacing the Planning Commission and giving states a larger role in policymaking.

New Delhi: As Narendra Modi completes 25 years in public office, from becoming Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001 to serving as Prime Minister, the creation of NITI Aayog stands out as one of the major institutional changes introduced during his tenure at the Centre.

NITI Aayog was established on January 1, 2015, replacing the Planning Commission that had been in place since 1950. The change was aimed at moving away from a system in which economic planning and the allocation of central funds were largely driven from New Delhi.
