Multi-year drilling campaign successfully reaches bedrock beneath Anarctic Ice Sheet
New Delhi: For the first time, scientists have drilled through the entire Antarctic ice sheet, reaching the bedrock beneath. The collected samples are expected to unlock a continuous history of greenhouse gases, atmospheric temperatures and climate going back 1.2 million years, and possibly beyond. The feat was achieved at the remote Little Dome C site in Antarctica by a team of researchers from twelve institutions across Europe. The initiative is part of the Beyond EPICA – Oldest Ice project. While the upper layers have a high-resolution record, the lower layers are compressed.
