Gaia shuts eyes after ten years of mapping Milky Way
New Delhi: ESA’s Gaia instrument began science operations in 2014, and has now stopped its observations. The instrument was designed with the ambitious goal of mapping the positions and motions of over a billion stars in the vicinity, and has revealed our galaxy in unprecedented granular detail. We now know that there are more than two spiral arms to the galaxy, with a central bar that is more inclined with respect to the Sun than previously believed. Machine learning has supercharged the insights being derived from Gaia, allowing scientists to identify enhancing the understanding of the structure of the Milky Way........
