New Delhi: The primordial Earth was a hostile environment, with a thick, toxic atmosphere devoid of life. Ultraviolet light harmful to cells would have been pouring out of the energetic young Sun. The surface was being pummeled by a bombardment by asteroids and comets. Volcanoes in a hot, young planet spewed lava and pumped carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In this chaotic environment, life emerged for the first time.
