Women’s Reservation Bill defeated in Lok Sabha, fails to get required two-third majority
The legislation was tabled during a special session of Parliament on April 16, 2026, as part of a wider reform package that also included the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, the Delimitation Bill 2026, and the Union Territories Laws Amendment Bill.
New Delhi: The Women’s Reservation Bill was defeated in the Lok Sabha on Friday after it failed to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority required for its passage.
The bill aimed to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies, with implementation proposed from the 2029 elections. However, it could not gather sufficient support in the lower house.
