Clashes erupt near Ujjain’s Shahi Masjid over proposed demolition, police use tear gas

Police used tear gas near Ujjain’s Shahi Masjid on Monday after stones were thrown at security personnel during a confrontation over its proposed partial demolition. The mosque is among 272 structures marked for a road-widening project ahead of the 2028 Simhastha Mela. Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi has urged the administration to spare it.

New Delhi: Police used tear gas near the Shahi Masjid in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Monday as a crowd gathered to oppose the proposed demolition of part of the mosque for a road-widening project.

Videos from the scene showed stones being thrown at security personnel during the confrontation. Rapid Action Force personnel were also deployed near the mosque. The accounts available did not establish whether anyone was injured or detained.
