Governments across continents professing various ideologies are embracing the idea of limited government. It is time for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to redeem his pledge of ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’. We need an Indian version of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Argentina’s Libertarian President, Javier Milei, could be called the father of government downsizing in recent times. During his presidential campaign in late 2023, he frequently carried a chainsaw at rallies to symbolise his plan to slash the size of government. After winning the election, his administration halved the number of ministries to eight and downgraded the ministries of education, culture, labour, gender and diversity, and social development. “The number of public sector workers fell by 10 per cent last year," an AP report stated.

Inspired by Milei’s chainsaw approach, US President Donald Trump set up DOGE under billionaire Elon Musk. Musk’s statements and actions—particularly the defunding of the Left-infested USAID—have enraged woke mobs worldwide, but that is another story.
