Opinion | Congress CWC Overhaul: Is It Enough To Revive The Party’s Fortunes?
A drastic overhaul of the Congress Working Committee is on the cards. AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi have decided to remove the ‘dead wood’ and bench A. K. Antony, Ambika Soni, and Anand Sharma.
The party leadership, desperate to create vacancies in the 36-member CWC to accommodate the newly appointed AICC office-bearers, is also eyeing the exit of Jairam Ramesh, Gaurav Gogoi, Randeep Surjewala, and Charanjit Singh Channi. Gaurav Gogoi is tipped to be the face of Congress in the poll-bound state of Assam. Surjewala and Channi are reportedly keen to head the Congress units in Haryana and Punjab. In fact, last week, Channi’s name had figured as an AICC general secretary, but he excused himself on the grounds of his interest in Punjab state politics.
Congress insiders say the removal of some CWC members is necessary to accommodate Rajani Patil (in charge of Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh), B. K. Hariprasad (Haryana), Harish Chaudhary (Madhya Pradesh), Girish Chodankar (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry), Ajay Kumar Lallu (Odisha), K.
