A minister's remarks on Pakistan's 'collapsed' system have fuelled speculation over military dominance, provincial reorganisation and Asim Munir's next move

Recent statements by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi have sparked a new debate in Pakistani politics. Naqvi, considered close to Field Marshal Asim Munir, was given charge of the Interior Ministry at a very young age.

Addressing a conference, he said Pakistan’s system has collapsed—meaning it has become dilapidated—and has failed to provide facilities to the people of Pakistan or fulfil the aspirations of the youth. He mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif works very hard, but even if he works 18 hours a day, he cannot fix Pakistan’s situation. With this statement, he hinted at administrative restructuring in Pakistan and added that the four provinces of Pakistan need to be divided to create more administrative blocks—whether they are called provinces or something else—so that power can reach the people at the ground level. He also mentioned a larger role for the Pakistani establishment, namely the military, in his statements.

Following this conference, when Pakistani military spokesperson DG ISPR Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry was asked about Naqvi’s statements, he initially stated that he did not want to comment on political matters, but then went on to endorse all the views expressed by Naqvi and criticised the political leadership.
