This is one legislation that has been carefully thought out. Its provisions seem watertight. Perhaps that explains why it took a fair bit of time to arrive

India is legislatively hitting back at last in the 1,000-year demographic war it has faced. After “three Islamic nations" were carved out of it and indigenous faiths wiped out from large swathes of the Northeast, south India, and now places like Punjab, some states are trying to make sure that demography altered by design does not become the land’s destiny.

The strongest salvo lately has come from Maharashtra. The Devendra Fadnavis government has brought the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Act, 2026, with a long view.
