Opinion | America Is Setting Itself An Afghanistan-Like Trap By Backing Jamaat In Bangladesh
Langley, it seems, clings to its old playbook like a sleepy child to its stuffed toy. Why else would it sweep aside every lesson learnt from the United States’ debacles in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, or Libya to commit itself to the same blunder in Bangladesh?
After a widely speculated regime-change operation overthrowing Sheikh Hasina by funding a network of NGOs and violent groups, and installing Obama-Clinton close ally Muhammad Yunus as the chief advisor in the interim government, a leaked conversation purportedly between Eric Geelan, counsellor of the US embassy for political/economic affairs, and a Jamaat leader has stirred up Bangladesh and its neighbourhood.
The US has been caught with its hand in the jar. But why would it want to prop up the Sharia crowd which opposed Bangladesh’s liberation and collaborated with the Pakistani army in the 1971........
