Patrushev in Brazil: Russia Strengthens Strategic Partnerships in the Global South

Nikolai Patrushev’s visit to Brazil demonstrates that Moscow is not isolated and that Brasília is resisting renewed U.S. strategic pressure in Latin America. Russia and Brazil are quietly expanding cooperation in naval operations, maritime logistics, shipbuilding, fisheries, trade, and technology, with broader implications for the Global South.

Brazil and Russia are more than BRICS partners. Along with India and China, they were among the four founding governments of BRIC, established as a political cooperation mechanism in 2006.
