Every monsoon, Gurugram is confronted with the same paradox. A city celebrated as one of India's most modern urban economies can be brought to a standstill by a few hours of intense rainfall. Roads become channels, underpasses become reservoirs, and traffic corridors become temporary floodplains.
It is tempting to describe this as a drainage failure. But that explanation is incomplete. Gurugram's recurring flooding is fundamentally a failure to plan the city as a hydrological system.
The geography of Gurugram has always demanded a particular relationship with water. The Aravallis form the higher ground along the southern and eastern edges of the urban region, while the terrain falls towards the north and northwest. Historical drainage patterns carried water through seasonal channels, depressions, ponds, and natural drains towards the Najafgarh system. Studies have identified an elevation difference of roughly 60 to 70 metres between the Aravalli foothills and the Najafgarh basin, creating a natural gradient for the movement of stormwater.
The problem is that the contemporary city has progressively obscured this geography.
Water Follows Topography, Not Master Plans
A city may be divided into sectors, plots, and infrastructure zones, but rainwater does not recognise these boundaries. It follows slope, soil, permeability, and gravity.
This is why the idea that Gurugram can solve flooding simply by adding larger drains is inadequate. A drainage network is the final component of a catchment system, not a substitute for one.
When open land becomes concrete, the hydrological equation changes.
