A significant shake-up in Canadian politics as the federal NDP have opted for a hard left turn in the form of Avi Lewis, who won a sweeping first-ballot victory in the NDP leadership race. With the party already relegated to non-party status in the House of Commons, there are questions about whether such an unabashed ideologue is the one to lead them back to relevancy. Certainly there’s been concern expressed by provincial NDP leaders — including and especially the NDP leaders in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

But one political observer says we shouldn’t be so quick to write off Avi Lewis. In this conversation with Rob Breakenridge, Royce Koop, who’s a professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba and political columnist for the Winnipeg Sun, makes the case that there is an audience on the left for many of Lewis’s ideas, and that he could represent a threat to the Carney Liberals.
