On Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a three-year China deal that will relax tariffs on canola, peas and seafood in exchange for allowing the import of 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles per year. Before announcing it, Carney said that this new friendship “sets us up well for the new world order.”

Which has me wondering: What’s the plan if China invades Taiwan? Are we going to sit on the sidelines? Are we going to keep the trade going while issuing a multitude of empty statements condemning the conflict in the South China Sea? Are we going to help … and if so, which side?
The trade talks are playing out in front of a backdrop of increasing Chinese aggression directed at Taiwan and other Canadian allies in the region.
