Canada must offer Ukraine whatever support it can amid this week’s tense peace negotiations with the United States. Although our influence is limited, our national interests would be harmed if Kyiv were to be bullied into a bad deal with Russia.

This latest round of negotiations was initiated last Thursday after Washington abruptly presented a Kremlin-friendly “peace” plan that had been secretly co-developed with Moscow. The document shocked western allies, who called it a capitulation that would leave Ukraine vulnerable to another Russian invasion.
The 28-point plan called for Ukraine to cede the remainder of its Donetsk province, where the country’s main defensive fortifications are located, and to cap the size of its military at 600,000 personnel, which is
