America still doesn't understand how deep the rift goes

The north remembers. 

Right now, that’s not just a catchphrase from the hit American television show about dragons and thrones. It’s also a fact for millions of Canadians stuck dealing with a second Trump administration that routinely threatens our cultural sovereignty and political independence with economic warfare. No matter what happens in the upcoming midterm elections or even the 2028 presidential contest, and no matter how much Americans eventually try to put this latest flirtation with fascism behind them, Canadians will not forget how they are being treated right now — or how some Americans react when we fight back.

This still seems to come as a shock to some Americans in blue states like California, who can’t quite understand why we’re boycotting their wines and abandoning their tourism sector. But make no mistake: those boycotts are working. According to a recent Los Angeles Times piece on the sale of a popular winery, “Canada’s exports used to make up 40 per cent of the company’s export sales, but have fallen to 5 per cent.” 

It wasn’t “Canada’s boycott” that forced the winery's sale, of course, as much as it was the longer-running challenges facing most wineries in the United States, from alcohol’s declining popularity among younger people to the impact of climate change on crop yields and costs.
