It was a wet, grey and chilly November morning in my Ville-Émard neighbourhood. I had just stepped into my local dépanneur to get my daily dose of caffeine when the owner, Mrs. Yoo, greeted me with a large smile and, as usual — because she knows I work in the media — questions about the news of the day.
Mrs. Yoo emigrated from South Korea decades ago and has worked hard to keep her independent business thriving. The whole neighbourhood stops by for chips, candy, soft drinks — and the occasional gossip and chit-chat about anything and everything.
Over the years, she has become one of my political barometers. If Mrs. Yoo mentions something in the news the moment I walk through the door, it usually means it has already become the talk of the town.
