When the state and the corporation agree on which words—and which images—are ‘dangerous,’ the truth is not only suppressed; it is simply made unsearchable. The official American narrative of the ‘miraculous’ rescue mission in the Zagros mountains on 3rd April 2026 serves as a perfect case in point.

Despite America’s digital iron curtain, the truth keeps breaking. The narrative concerning the rescued pilot is already in ruins, and the Trump administration has moved from defending the story, to managing the wreckage. The first signs came over Telegram:  grainy phone photos of debris, an empty ejection seat, and videos of helicopters flying low over the mountains of south west Iran. Within hours, the world knew something had gone terribly wrong, before any official American statement was issued. 

What we have witnessed over the past two weeks was a masterclass in narrative manipulation, until it collapsed. The Trump administration has attempted to impose something unprecedented: a complete information blackout over an entire theatre of war. Commercial satellite imagery – the independent check on official claims that journalists and human rights monitors have relied on for years- has been suspended indefinitely at the government’s request. Journalists have been threatened with prison, leakers hunted as traitors, and the Pentagon has even instructed private companies on which words they are forbidden to use.

Approved language includes ‘damaged’, ‘inoperative’, or ‘temporarily unavailable’. This is beyond spin, it is the systematic laundering of vocabulary – a trademark of authoritarian information control.  When you cannot say ‘destroyed’, you cannot fully grasp the scale of the disaster. 

But despite the blackout and the threats, the truth is bleeding through.  Let’s lay out the competing versions side by side.
