'I'm a dog lover but I get why they're being excluded'
Let me start by saying I'm a dog lover.
Getting our dog Poppy as a child is one of my happiest memories and our Labrador Milo is as much part of my family now as anyone else.
My kids complain that he's my favourite and I have to admit that, on some days, they might well be right. He's the only one to greet me with enthusiasm these days, goes for walks without complaining, eats whatever is put in front of him and doesn't answer back. Plus he gives the best cuddles. What's not to love?
Like many families, we got him during the pandemic - well towards the end of it - a time when dog ownership soared.
Figures from 2024 show that 28% of UK adults now have a dog, with an estimated population of 10.6 million pet dogs.
