There is no single scoreboard for worldwide popularity, and on the measures that can be counted Lionel Messi and Taylor Swift lead in different places.

On Instagram, the largest public follower list, Messi is far ahead. As of Oct. 5, 2026, his account had about 516.9 million followers, third among all accounts and second among people, behind Cristiano Ronaldo at about 679.8 million. Taylor Swift had about 272.7 million, 14th on the same list, just ahead of Virat Kohli. That gap, roughly 244 million accounts, is larger than the entire following of many global stars.

A cross-platform tally published Oct. 1 put Messi at about 639 million followers across YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, and Swift at about 530.8 million. Messi's total is concentrated: about 516 million on Instagram and 118 million on Facebook, with a YouTube page that has not been updated since 2023 and no TikTok or X account in that count. Swift's is wider: about 272 million on Instagram, 78 million on Facebook, 63.5 million on YouTube, 33.4........
