Kate Middleton Had Reservations Before Accepting Princess Of Wales Title, New Royal Biography Reveals
LONDON — Catherine, Princess of Wales, privately weighed whether to take on one of the most emotionally loaded titles in the British monarchy before ultimately accepting it, according to a new royal biography that offers fresh insight into the transition following Queen Elizabeth II's death.
The book, "William and Catherine, The Monarchy's New Era: The Inside Story," written by veteran royal editor Russell Myers, details how Catherine grappled with the weight of inheriting a title long associated with the late Princess Diana, who was the last woman to hold it before her death in 1997.
Catherine and Prince William assumed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales in September 2022, immediately after King Charles III ascended the throne following his mother's death. The couple had known for years that the shift in roles was coming, but according to Myers, the actual handover prompted private soul-searching within the family.
Myers writes that while Catherine respected the history tied to the role, she wanted to carve out her own identity rather than be measured against her late mother-in-law. According to the book, she raised her concerns directly with both her husband and King Charles before agreeing to take on the title.
"Courtiers said that while Catherine had a full appreciation of the history associated with the role, she was determined to find her own path," Myers writes in the biography.
