Entrepreneur and pop culture icon Paris Hilton launched an initiative today to support female small-business owners who have been affected by disasters. The fund builds off of her philanthropy for women entrepreneurs after the Los Angeles fires last year.

Hilton will donate $350,000 for the Back in Business Recovery Fund, with plans to raise $1 million or more by the end of the month.

“Women-owned businesses are really the heart of so many of these communities,” Hilton told The Associated Press. “I want to be able to lift up and support them, shine a light on them, and really make a difference in their lives.”

A Lack of Funding for Female Entrepreneurs

The U.S. is home to 14.5 million women-owned businesses, representing 39 percent of businesses, according to Wells Fargo. Even so, women received significantly less funding than men through venture capital and loans.

“They are the most undercapitalized and underresourced, and particularly if primary caregiving responsibilities are falling on them too, sometimes that leads to increased recovery burden,” Rebecca Grone, director of 11:11 Media Impact, told AP.

Hilton’s funds will be dispersed through grants in partnership with local women’s business centers in the U.S. Those centers will also help determine when to deploy the funds.

While centered around women, the money is meant to strengthen the surrounding communities, too.
