The European Union is backpedaling toward the abyss

With every event, with every crisis looming on the horizon, the European Union is showing more cracks and fresh proof of its lack of political substance. The mealy-mouthed reactions to the U.S. aggression against Venezuela – with the accompanying litany of threats, warnings and intimidations toward other countries – are no exception.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, handsomely paid to issue empty statements and put forward proposals with no follow-up, failed to utter a word about the self-celebrated aggression of the Trump administration, limiting herself to the deadpan hailing of “an opportunity for democratic transition in Venezuela.” 

Not even when it came to the European territory of Greenland – once again threatened with U.S. annexation – did the figurehead government in Brussels prove itself capable of showing firmness in any credible form. It was the individual nation-states that responded, in a joint statement with a hint of irritation – nevertheless, they offloaded the problem onto NATO and the letter of the treaties governing relations between alliance members – not without first giving assurance that Washington’s interests would also be safeguarded by Europe’s........
