But that’s only one side of the gaseous exchange. What about the effects our toots might have on the people around us? Is there any way to tell if we’re dealing with an inoffensive parp or a foul, sulphuric stench bomb before it’s out?
According to both AsapSCIENCE and clinical immunologist Dr Zachary Rubin, there might be.
In a recent Instagram Reel, the doctor responded to another site user asking how you can “always tell” when a downstairs thunderstorm is set to bring its stinky wrath.
“We’re talking about the physiology of flatulence,” he began.
